Every quote has two currencies: the base (first) and the quote (second). EUR/USD = 1.0850 means 1 euro costs 1.0850 US dollars. Buying the pair means buying the base and selling the quote.
| Group | Examples | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Majors | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF | Contain USD, tightest spreads |
| Commodity | AUD/USD, NZD/USD, USD/CAD | Track commodity prices |
| Minors / crosses | EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY | No USD, wider spreads |
| Exotics | USD/TRY, USD/ZAR, USD/MXN | Thin liquidity, violent moves |
Beginners should stay on majors: tighter spreads, cleaner technical behaviour and far more available analysis.
