Design skill compounds through critique and repetition. A portfolio is not a gallery of pretty pictures — it is a set of arguments that you can solve problems.
- Critique language: describe what you see, then its effect, then a suggestion. Never 'I don't like it'.
- Self-critique checklist: hierarchy, alignment, contrast, spacing rhythm, type count, colour count.
- Case study structure: problem → constraints → process → decisions → outcome → metrics.
- Six deep case studies beat sixty dribbble shots.
- Show iterations and rejected directions — process is what clients buy.
- Always mock work in realistic context: signage, device screens, packaging, print.
| Portfolio piece | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Brand identity | Systems thinking |
| Poster series | Composition and type |
| UI product screen | Digital fluency |
| Packaging or print | Production knowledge |
| Social template set | Commercial usefulness |
Every case study should answer one question in its first line: what problem did this design solve?
