Graphic design is visual problem solving. Every piece has a job: sell, inform, identify or persuade. Aesthetics serve the job — they are never the job itself.
| Element | Meaning | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Line | Direction and division | Guiding the eye, separating zones |
| Shape | Enclosed form | Structure, icons, containers |
| Space | Emptiness around form | Breathing room, luxury, focus |
| Colour | Hue, saturation, value | Mood, hierarchy, brand recall |
| Texture | Surface quality | Depth, tactility, realism |
| Type | Language made visual | Message, tone, hierarchy |
| Scale | Relative size | Importance and drama |
- Contrast — make different things obviously different.
- Repetition — repeat visual traits to create unity.
